Wedding Invitation Timeline: When to Order and Follow Up

Getting your wedding invitations out on time is key to a smooth planning process. But between choosing designs, printing, and posting, it’s easy to lose track of what needs to happen when.

This quick guide covers everything you need to know about when to order, send and follow up on your wedding invitations... so nothing gets left to the last minute.

When to Order Your Invitations

Start the process around 5–6 months before your wedding day. This gives you time to finalise the guest list, decide on wording, approve proofs and allow for printing and delivery. If you're ordering bespoke or illustrated invitations, consider starting even earlier.

When to Send Invitations

As a general rule, aim to post your invitations 3–4 months before the wedding. If you're planning a destination wedding, or your date falls during school holidays or summer peak season, send them 4–6 months in advance to give guests more notice.

What About Evening Guests?

If you're having separate day and evening guest lists, it's best to send both sets of invitations at the same time. This avoids confusion and ensures everyone receives their details in good time.

When to Set Your RSVP Deadline

Set your RSVP deadline around 6 weeks before the wedding. This gives you time to finalise your numbers, share a seating plan with your venue, and confirm any catering details. Add a little buffer to chase late replies if needed.

Do You Need to Follow Up?

Yes... it’s totally normal to follow up with guests who haven’t responded by the deadline. A friendly message or phone call is often all it takes. Most people appreciate the reminder, especially if your invite was tucked into a pile of post.

With a little forward planning and a clear timeline, your invitation process can be one of the most exciting parts of your wedding journey... not one of the most stressful.
