Creating your guest list is one of the first major steps in wedding planning... and once it’s finalised, the next question is: who actually receives an invitation?
It might sound straightforward, but there are a few important things to consider before you start writing envelopes. Here’s a guide to help you navigate the process with confidence and clarity.
1. Everyone Invited to the Ceremony
This is the easy part... if someone is invited to your ceremony, they absolutely need a formal invitation. That includes immediate family, close friends, and anyone involved in the wedding party.
2. Evening Guests Need Their Own Invitations
If you're having separate day and evening guest lists, evening-only guests still need a formal invite. Be sure the wording makes it clear which part of the day they’re invited to, including arrival time and any details about food or entertainment.
3. Plus Ones – Yes or No?
This depends on your budget, venue size and overall vision. A good rule is to offer a plus one to anyone who is married, engaged, living with a partner, or has been in a long-term relationship. If space is tight, it's okay to invite solo guests without a plus one... just make sure it’s communicated clearly on the envelope.
4. Children – Only If They’re Invited
If you're having a child-free wedding, be consistent. Address invitations to adults only, and consider including a polite note on your details card or website to explain. If children are invited, be sure to include their names on the invitation too.
5. People You’re No Longer Inviting
If someone received a save the date but is no longer on your final guest list (perhaps due to budget or venue changes), it’s kind to reach out personally. A short message explaining the situation is more thoughtful than silence.
Your guest list is personal, and every couple’s situation is different. The most important thing is to be thoughtful, consistent, and clear in your communication... so your guests know exactly what to expect, and you can move forward with your plans stress-free.
